In today’s media landscape, getting good press for a client takes more than sending out a press release or staging a publicity stunt. It takes true guerrilla techniques: Nimble thinking, unexpected execution, and a willingness to try something that’s never been done before. The one thing that’s not required? A PR firm. This is Do-It-Yourself PR at its finest. And it’s available to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

As the 2007-2008 AdFed season comes to a close, let’s take a retrospective look back on all the fun we’ve had together! What was good & bad about each program (including food, timing & location)? Any requests? Let’s hear it!

August, 2007

We kicked off August with our annual fall TV preview mixer with cocktails and canapes at the Redstone Room!

October, 2007

In October, Dan Merfield and Wes Grubbs of Design Madison road-tripped to the QC to share their insights on the evolution of interactive media.

November, 2007

Trivia Night in November exposed us for the greedy hooligans we all really are as we competed for the right to claim the title of “Champions in Intellectual Domination and Superiority in All Things Trivial.”

February, 2008

We’d had enough of winter break by the time the Addys rolled around in February, so we went camping!

March, 2008

March brought Emmy award winning writer and producer Steve Lance in like a lion from New York, speaking on “Marketers Are From Mars, Creatives From Venus, and How to Solve Your Earthly Problems.” Steve piqued the interest of both marketers and creatives with his engaging presentation on why the two don’t always work well together, and how they can learn to speak the same language in order to produce great work. Thanks to Bandag for their generous contribution to make this event possible!

April, 2008

In April, John Besmer, Creative Director of Planet Propaganda in Madison, presented “Simplify Then Amplify: Communicating In A World That Won’t Wait.” Through a mix of process and work, along with a few unintentionally random musings for good measure, John relayed how Planet Propaganda, a print, motion, and interactive firm, has reconfigured itself to deliver integrated, cutting-edge creative in today’s accelerated business and cultural environment.

May, 2008

In May, Casey McGarr, former Creative Director of Fossil, and owner of Inky Lips Letterpress in Dallas, took us on a wildly inspirational trip down memory lane as he led us on the creative journey it took to build the Fossil brand, and how it’s influenced all of his successive work. He even gave away several letterpress posters to some lucky audience members in a random drawing!

June, 2008

While all the kids began rotting their brains in June, AdFed members couldn’t soak up enough of Peter Meng’s Search Engine Optimization wisdom. Meng, an Interactive Strategist for Woodruff Sweitzer in Columbia, Missouri, shared so many priceless SEO tips and tricks that even our sponsors, Sedona Technologies, learned something new!

So, what’d you think? Hit me, baby! All in all, I’d say it’s been an educational and fun year, and I’ve enjoyed putting on programs for the QC AdFed with the help of my fellow board members! But it ain’t over yet–stay tuned as the fun continues next season!

Ghazala Irshad, Programming Chair
